The Nuka System of Care is a general term describing the
health care system which was created by Alaska Native people to achieve maximum
wellness. The word Nuka is used when describing strong, giant structures and
living things. The Nuka Healthcare System is a relationship-based care model
that combines modern and traditional practices. The healthcare system has three
main beliefs customer ownership, relationship, and whole system transformation.
The customer ownership belief is that people will not be called “patients” but
will be treated as equals and they will help make decisions around their
health. The next belief relationship is the importance of the relationship
between the primary care provider and the customer. The primary care provider
understands that the customer is in charge of their own lifestyle choices and
health care decisions it allows them to focus on understanding each customer’s
life and supports them. The last belief of whole system transformation is
descrbing the impact the customer and how it impacts the healthcare system as a
whole. There are five key work systems in the Nuka Healthcare system which are
workforce development, compliance, human resources, and finance.
